The "head" of the ME has like, exaggerated surface tension. It can push against things, but press too hard and you'll break through into the liquidly inside. If it smacks something hard it'll just shatter into beads of liquid.

They're basically shellfish, and they're "shucked" when they're put in the suits.
While they can survive outside of the suits, the Root of their body is very fragile, and has to be protected from infection and abrasion.
