It took ten long chapters, but I think they're officially friends now. There's no recovering your aloof coolness after a flying hug turns into gross chest sobbing.

Sweet bliss of a page with muted colours and nothing bleeding or pulsating red.

You'll notice the layout of the double page spread is different than what's on the site. That one was done specifically for the web and there's nothing to scale up for you, while this original higher res version is formatted for eventual, conventional print. Secrets!

Quigley's instructions to Elan had a second part, didn't they? Anyone remember what they were?

We're so close though. So close!

And for the climax, I went as red as red could go. I really like the penultimate panel here of Duane gnawing on the good captain's collarbone. That was a tricky angle (and also it's a little sexy sorry i'm so sorry)

Have a good weekend everyone! I'll be going to several indie craft markets in search of ugly handmade jewellery with skulls on i...

Starfish's expressions on this page were cathartic to draw. Sette's dead expression, on the other hand, just depresses me. At least she gets the job done.

It was tricky to get all the angles right here. The size difference between the two is so great and I wanted every exchange to read very clearly and have a lot of weight and violence. I think it came together okay.

Surprise Starfish! Starfish is always tricky to draw in more dynamic poses since his fat belly often gets in the way of his limbs and his big nose can get in the way of his expression when his head tilts. I've always found it a fun challenge though. I think it's the contrast of his physique with his physicality that I enjoy so much. Starfish isn't ...

Looks like "Lighthearted antics" won out the live drawing suggestion poll. Adelier household antics came in right behind it though so I think I'll combine the two, perhaps? Thanks for all the great ideas, guys, and thanks for the questions! If you have anything else for the Q&A get it in this week as I'll probably do the recording this coming w...

Page dump! I think my favourite bit from this scene is Duane losing all eloquence and wit when he sees a very genuinely upset Crescian Peaceguard, and responding not with an insult or a jibe or even dead silence or dismissal. Simply a lame: "It's all right." You'd almost think he can't automatically hate this man.

Meanwhile Cutter is very irr...

Drawing Video + Q&A suggestions

I think it's about time for another drawing video and Q&A! If you guys could help me out by posting questions here along with ideas for whatever you'd like me to draw and colour on camera, I'd love to put that together for you! Last month we did Knock and Anadyne and I thought it turned out pretty well.

I know there's been some rumbling o...

And now a moment of badassery for Cutter to round it out.

Hopefully everyone on the site votes to let me dump this scene next week. Action scenes are no good in this posting format, you lose track of what everyone's doing and where they're at!

This page definitely benefits from a higher resolution. I wanted a real chaotic sprawl to pump up to the final fight. Last contingent of brothel workers and patrons is holed up hiding. Citizens outside the Nevergreen are trying to help but being attacked. Dawn's down, Sette's in peril but has her plan in motion, and our three bickering dudebros hav...

I didn't much like stabbing Dawn, but I thought it was poignant that Starfish gets her right in the stomach after the eels' cruel fishing trip through her memories a few pages ago.

Sette and Dawn are pretty cute together, brief though their interaction is. I think Sette can get along with anyone provided they at least humour her.

Starfish is so broad. Starfish, stop eating everyone's sandwiches.

In the original script, Sette's confrontation with the baby-shaped ghosts happened here, after she evicts them from Dawn's turban. I decided to do it earlier and move it to Stockyard's office so I could keep this faster pace and not break the action up. It's very move-move-move! from here to the end! Though there are still a few wrenches in the wor...

I've always liked drawing babies. When they were younger, I played daycare for my niece and nephew and would doodle them all day while they watched Nick Jr in order to maintain my sanity.

This page and the short scene that follows were otherwise a huge relief from the red silver mess going on with Duane, Quigs, and Toma. Nice big character sh...

Q&A 2!

Q&A 2!

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions and drawing suggestions! The Q&A is about thirty minutes long and takes up the first half of this sixty minute long Photoshop recording. The drawing is of Ana and Knock as teens. Ana is trying to "prettify" Knock per Granny Frummagem's instructions. Knock is trying her best to cooperate. This is a fair...
