So, I kind of started floundering on the Chocolate Cake project, and had to cleanse my brain-palate. Maybe Inside the Movies could become a series of its own. I guess we'll see.

Voice Acting is Complete!

Sorry About the Radio Silence!

I took a little road trip at the start of the month. I had fun, but came back with a cold... which has been dogging me for almost two weeks now. Yay!

Needless to say, it's been a quiet couple of weeks... but I think I'm feeling good enough to get back to business.

Chocolate Cake Sync Test

Since swearing off Adobe products, I've decided to use Apple Motion to animate this short. Setting up my facial rigs has actually been pretty easy... so, here's a quick sync test using hastily recorded dialogue.

I think this is a relative success... next up is finding voice actors for the parts, then drawing the rest of the assets.

Chocolate Cake

Here are some character design elements for an upcoming animated short with the working title of “Chocolate Cake”

The illustrations are Sharpie on Vellum. I will shoot them with a DSLR and further manipulate them digitally.

Anger Issues Dad Puppet 'paint job'

With craft-acrylics, I painted these badboys. Starting with a dark base and building on top of that.

The eyes were painted blue so I could key them out and add eyes in post.

A layer of podge was added to give them a glossy (and hopefully more gross looking) appearance.

On top of the foam board frames, I sculpted the shapes using crumpled newsprint paper and masking tape. After which I did a mâché layer with paper towels and a flour-based paste.

Following that, I smoothed things out with another mâché layer, this time using newsprint and a watered-down white glue paste.

Finally, I added tongues ...

Would you look at that... foam board! Man, I really depend on that stuff.

Here are the frames I built for the puppet heads. Honestly, I went into this without much of a game plan, and figured out how I was going to build them while doing so.

If I do future puppet-based content, I'll probably go about things a little differently.

The backgrounds were painted on 8" x 10" canvasses, photographed, then rear-projected onto a large white tarp hanging behind the actors.
